Liberty training is the art of working with horses without ropes or restraints—no halters, no lead lines—just pure connection. Through trust, body language, and clear intention, you’ll learn how to communicate with your horse in a way that fosters willing partnership and mutual respect.

Mckenzie Graham
McKenzie moved from California to Costa Rica four years ago, fulfilling a lifelong dream of living among horses in the valley of Punta Islita, a place she's loved for over 30 years. With decades of experience in showjumping, liberty work, and bridleless riding, she now shares her passion through unforgettable retreats on the beach with her well-loved herd.
In addition to hosting her own retreats, McKenzie also partners with other talented horse professionals. Her upcoming retreat features Sandor Miko, an internationally recognized liberty trainer known for his deeply intuitive, trust-based approach to horsemanship. Guests will have the rare opportunity to explore liberty work from one of the best, while enjoying the magic of riding in paradise.

I've been captivated by horses for as long as I can remember. A galloping horse across an open field has always symbolized true freedom to me—and I’ve spent a lifetime learning what that freedom really means.
My journey with horses began through quiet observation, studying how they communicate with each other and with us. Over time, I came to see that earning a horse’s trust and forming a true partnership is a gift—one that deserves to be honored by giving them freedom in return.
For me, liberty isn’t just a technique—it’s a philosophy. When you build a relationship based on trust, respect, and mutual understanding, horses become not just companions, but willing partners. Whether you're interested in dressage, jumping, or simply connecting with a horse on the ground, it all starts with the same foundation.
Here in Costa Rica, I’d love to share that approach with you—so you too can experience what it feels like to move as one with these incredible beings.

The Accommodations
You will be staying in 1 of 5 luxury bedrooms with ensuite bath
Experience the best of indoor/outdoor living at Casa Cielo, a unique retreat unlike many homes in CR. Whether you prefer to bask in the comfort of air conditioning behind huge sliding doors or relish the open-air feel with the gentle ocean breeze, this home seamlessly blends with nature. All living areas and bedrooms are equipped with both AC and screens, ensuring a comfortable environment. Conveniently located next to the horse farm.
Culinary Offerings
All meals, along with coffee and tea, are included in your stay (except on Wednesdays) and are thoughtfully prepared by Chef Gabriel Piedra. A highly skilled professional from Costa Rica with over 13 years of experience, Gabriel has honed his craft in luxury hotels, international restaurants, and yachts. He is passionate about exploring new culinary concepts and techniques, drawing inspiration from his travels and collaborations with other chefs. Gabriel incorporates unique, indigenous flavors into his dishes, adding a creative twist to traditional cuisine.
PLEASE NOTE: On your arrival day, you’ll have the opportunity to purchase drinks, snacks, and other essentials from the local market.
Schedule
DAILY SCHEDULE:

7 nights of accommodation with 3 daily meals (dinner on arrival day and breakfast on departure day included). One special dinner out in town and a traditional tortilla-making session at the farm.

Daily rides (1 to 1.5 hours) through beautiful beach, mountain, and sunset trails.

Spend two hours each day in a group setting, learning directly from Sandor as he works with our incredible herd in the round pen and along the beach. Optional one-on-one training sessions with Sandor will also be available on Wednesday.
FREE DAY (Wednesday):
Spend your day choosing from a variety of adventures: surf lessons at the local beach, an indulgent massage at the beachfront spa, ziplining, fishing, a morning wildlife tour, or our highly recommended full-day tour to a traditional coffee farm, with lunch and a visit to a waterfall—a truly authentic experience.
For intermediate/advanced riders, we can arrange (based on interest) a ride along a nearby 8km stretch of beach—an unforgettable experience.
One hour private sessions with Sando will be available.
PLEASE NOTE: Wednesday activities, lunch, and dinner are not included, but we can help customize your plans for the day.

Airport transport is available for an extra fee (price varies depending on group size). Liberia Airport (2.5 hours away) is preferred, or San José (5.5 hours away).

Rental cars are optional, but transport during the retreat is included.
